General Marcos Pérez Jiménez. During these years the most important groups of immigrants in the country were Italians, Portuguese and a new generation of Spaniards which incorporated quickly in Venezuelan society and started building the country shoulder to shoulder with the Venezuelans.

The last years of the immigration gulf a lot of South Americans (Colombians, Ecuadorians, Peruvians and Bolivians) made their new home in Venezuela.

This cultural mix became the essence of the Venezuelan people and has formed the heterogeneous characteristic of today's Venezuela. The population is divided the following way: mixed 67%, white 21%, colored 10% and natives 2%.

Currently approximately 26.000.000 people live in Venezuela , randomly divided over the whole country. This is mostly due to the discovery of oil causing people to leave their hometowns and move to find a better standard of living in the big cities. Nowadays about 93% of the people live in the urban zones and only about 3% lives in the rural areas.

The states with the biggest population are: Zulia, Miranda, Distrito Capital, Lara, Aragua and Bolívar. The least populated states are Delta Amacuro and Amazonas.
